This expedition is the authentic connection we create between the traveler, the land, and its people. This is not a massive or rushed tour: it is a private experience, guided by a native of the region who shares with us not only the Wayuu history and culture, but also the daily life of the desert, its unique biodiversity, and the most remote and tranquil landscapes of La Guajira. We avoid crowded routes, stay in uncrowded places, and travel without haste, but with intention. Our mission is for each visitor to feel part of the territory, not just as a spectator, but as an honored guest.
Please take your breakfast before the picking up.
Early in the morning (4:30) we'll take the vehicle that will take us to Riohacha (Guajira capital) where we'll have breakfast, then change to a 4x4 vehicle to go to Cabo De La Vela, it will be approximately 5 hours of drive since we'll make a stop in the middle to learn about the artisanal extraction of sea salt. Once in Cabo De La Vela and after settling into the accommodation, we'll take a walk along the calm and blue beaches walking along the coastline of the Cape and the town. We will look for the most appropriate place to have lunch, in front of the beach, enjoying the landscape and then we will get back on the vehicle to visit three of the most characteristic sectors of this town but that are several kilometers apart from each other. The Sugar Pilon, The Eye of Water and The Lighthouse, taking even more our time in the latter to watch the sunset! We will have dinner and learn about Wayuu culture (the native culture majority on this peninsula) in an evening talk.
We'll pack our breakfast and begin our 5:00 a.m. drive, covering approximately 90 km (about 3.5 hours) through the desert, thorn scrub, and salt flats of various communities on the peninsula. Around noon, we'll arrive at our lodging (where the only option is to spend the night in a hammock). Once settled in, we'll take a tour of the surrounding area for approximately three hours. This includes a visit to the northernmost point, Punta Gallinas; a viewpoint at the Bahía Hondita cove; and a view of the Taroa dunes beach. We'll then return in time for lunch and a rest. After digesting lunch, we'll take a boat tour of Bahía Hondita to observe some of the birds and the cove's landscape. Near sunset, we'll take a 15-minute walk to the beach to watch the sunset. We'll then have dinner and enjoy the tranquility of the place until the next morning.
Depending on the season (rainy or dry), we'll depart early in the morning, allowing us to take a break during the morning to admire the desert sunrise, have breakfast, and then head straight for Santa Marta around 7:30 a.m., crossing the desert back to the peninsula with only brief stops to admire the scenery, eat, and observe the daily life of the communities up close. We'll arrive in Riohacha around 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
