Nestled in the misty mountains of western Hunan, Fenghuang, or "Phoenix Ancient Town," is a living postcard of China. For over 300 years, it has been the home of the Tujia and Miao ethnic groups, preserving a unique culture that feels both ancient and vibrant. The soul of the town is the Tuo River. Flowing gently through the center, it is lined with iconic stilted houses (Diaojiaolou). These wooden structures, perched on stilts above the water, create a breathtaking reflection, especially when lit by red lanterns at night. The best way to experience this is a boat ride, gliding under ancient stone bridges like the Rainbow Bridge (Hongqiao) By day, explore the narrow flagstone streets, visit traditional courtyards, and see local artisans at work. By night, the town transforms. The lanterns glow, the river shimmers, and you can hear folk songs drifting from the bars along the banks.
