Explore the fascinating Ruta del Sillar, one of Arequipa’s most iconic trails, where history, geology and tradition meet. We will start the tour towards the quarries of Añashuayco and Culebrillas, located on the outskirts of the city. In Añashuayco you will meet the master stonemasons who, with ancient techniques, carve the ashlar — the volcanic white stone with which much of the Historic Center of Arequipa was built. Watch monumental sculptures, learn about their extraction process and take amazing photographs. Then we will visit Culebrillas Gorge, a narrow canyon of natural formations and pre-Hispanic petroglyphs. Departure from Arequipa (8 : 00 a.m. / 2 : 00 p.m.) Pick up from the hotel or meeting point in the center of Arequipa. Start of the tour to the north of the city, passing through traditional neighborhoods and with views of the Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu.
Añashuayco Quarry First stop at the impressive Añashuayco Quarry, one of the oldest and busiest in the region. Here you will know the process of extraction and carving of the ashlar, the volcanic white stone that gives its name to the “White City”. Master stonemasons will explain their traditional techniques and you can observe sculptures carved directly into the walls of the canyon. Time to take pictures and freely explore this imposing natural scenery.
Shingles Quarry We continue to Culebrillas Quarry, a natural ravine formed by the erosion of wind and water. We will take a light hike through the narrow canyon, surrounded by ashlar rock formations that reach more than 20 meters high. Along the way you can see pre-Inca petroglyphs, testimony to the passage of ancient cultures through the area. An ideal place to connect with nature and capture spectacular photos.
After the tour, we start the return to the city enjoying the views of the volcanic landscape of the valley. Arrival at approximately 12:30 p.m. (morning shift) or 6:30 p.m. (late shift). End of the tour at the starting point or in the historic center
