Thingvellir National Park, the birthplace of Iceland’s nation, hosted the world’s longest-running parliament from 930 to 1798. Thousands gathered there to resolve disputes and make laws. Revered by locals, it also showcases striking geology at the boundary of the North American and Eurasian plates, with rifts like Almannagjá. UNESCO recognized its cultural and natural significance in 2004.
Geysir Geothermal Area showcases steaming vents and bubbling pools, named after the original geyser, Geysir. Though that now lies dormant, the nearby Strokkur geyser erupts every 5–10 minutes, sending water 20 meters high. Colorful geothermal features line the walking paths.
Gullfoss, the “Golden Waterfall,” drops 32 meters in two tiers into a 70-meter canyon. Fed by the Hvítá river from the Langjökull glacier, it carries rich history, including a woman’s successful fight against a proposed hydroelectric dam. Well-maintained paths allow you to admire its power from various vantage points.
Laugarás Lagoon is a newly opened geothermal spa - enjoy the pretty riverside view from one of multiple pools, cold plunges, saunas and more. Your package includes a Birki entrance ticket. Remember to pack your towel for this day.
Seljalandsfoss waterfall is set in idyllic surrounds. Taking the walking path behind the falls is an experience to remember!
Volcanic black sand is a memory many visitors take home from Iceland with them. Reynifjara is the most famous of these black beach. Remarkable geometric basalt cliffs loom over the beafh here.
We continue to Sólheimajökull, a glacier tongue of Mýrdalsjökull, reaching it by a short walk. Here, the impacts of climate change are clear: the glacier has retreated hundreds of meters in the past decade, leaving a lagoon behind. If conditions permit, your guide will bring you close enough to touch this impressive yet rapidly shrinking glacier.
Continuing along the south coast, we reach the breathtaking Skógafoss waterfall. Here, the Skógá River plunges 60 meters into a rugged gorge before flowing toward the Atlantic. A nearby staircase leads to an overlook above the falls, providing sweeping panoramic views of the dramatic, picture-perfect surroundings.
We return to the capital area, with one more stop to make before your day is over. Sky Lagoon is situated on the outskirts of the city, with stunning sea views from the larger open geothermal pool. Check out the 7 step gilmir ritual, with sauna, steambath and more. Your Saman ticket includes towel.
At Seltún, walk wooden paths amid steaming mud pools and hot streams, with colorful mineral-rich ground. The sulfur-rich air reflects the dissolved minerals from beneath. Two viewing platforms offer 360-degree views of this striking geothermal landscape.
Since 2021 a series of volcanic eruption have rocked a small area of the Reykjanes peninsula. This has created much interest in visitors to these shores. Even though there is no active flowing lava currently, it is fascintating to take a hike to the previous eruption sites, where the darker, now cooled lava, sits starkly alongside the old landscape. The hike to a good viewing point takes around 2 hours each way. The route we take can change from day to day depending on wind and weather conditions. There are a couple of short and steep sections, but the way is generally pretty flat. Your expert guide will make sure this adventure is fun and educational, and of course safe and responsible.
And so to the final lagoon - the most famous of them all, The Blue Lagoon. Reflect on the past 3 days in the healing, silica-rich waters. Your comfort ticket includes face-mask and free drink at the in-lagoon bar.
