Mochitsuki Rice Cake Making Experience in Ojika Island

2 hours (approximately)
Offered in: Japanese and 1 more

A very fun activity for both adults and children. Making your rice cakes from scratch traditionally is a great way to immerse yourself in Japanese culture. The location is amazing, with a house being an old Japanese folk house with a bathhouse and gallery inside. The instructor is very welcoming and friendly. And rice cakes taste amazing with different toppings that the instructor will prepare for you in advance. This activity is a must for all the foodies out there.

What to expect

In Ojika you can make rice cakes from locally grown rice. The rice used for this experience is planted by hand (an increasingly rare practice in Japan) with a flock of ducks in charge of weeds and pest control in the rice paddy that is made with love.

First, you will steam the rice. Then, you will use a big wooden mallet to pound it into a gooey mass which you will then shape into rice cakes. The freshly pounded rice cakes, still warm and soft, taste the best! You can also choose to add yummy fillings and toppings: sweet red bean paste, sweet soybean flour, grated radish with soy sauce, or fermented soybeans.

This experience is great fun! It can be enjoyed by adults as well as children and is perfect for families and groups of friends.
