After meeting your tour conductor, we’ll take a comfortable bus and head toward the breathtaking coastal beauty of the Shakotan Peninsula, a hidden gem in Hokkaido famous for its brilliant blue waters, dramatic cliffs, and exquisite sea urchin delicacies. Our first stop is at the newly opened Michi-no-Eki Furubira, a roadside station that opened in spring 2025. Nestled in a small fishing town along the Sea of Japan, this modern facility offers a glimpse into local life and regional flavors. Browse local specialties, discover fresh Hokkaido produce and seafood, or simply stretch your legs while enjoying the peaceful coastal atmosphere. It’s a refreshing stop before we dive into the wild beauty of Shakotan.

Next, we visit Shimamui Coast, one of only five places in Hokkaido selected for the prestigious “100 Best Shores in Japan.” As you step out onto the observation deck, you’ll be greeted by an awe-inspiring view of sheer cliffs plunging into the crystal-clear sea. The coastal path leading through a tunnel carved into the rock adds a touch of adventure, while the panoramic view from the cliffside is a perfect photo opportunity. The rugged beauty of the shoreline, shaped by centuries of wind and waves, captures the wild essence of northern Japan.

We then will walk to the lunch venue at a local restaurant famous for its visually stunning Uni-don—a rice bowl completely hidden beneath a generous layer of sea urchin. This luxurious dish is a seasonal specialty of Shakotan, where fresh uni harvested from the surrounding waters is prized for its creamy texture and sweet, briny flavor. For those who do not eat sea urchin, a vibrant seafood bowl (kaisendon) is available instead with advance notice. Enjoy your meal in comfort with table and chair seating, and don’t miss the hearty hamanabe (fisherman-style hotpot) that comes with it. Please note that depending on the weather and sea conditions, steamed uni may be served when fresh uni is unavailable. *A standard seafood rice bowl is available if preferred. Please mention so at the time of booking or contact the tour operator at least one week before the trip.

Finally, we journey to Cape Kamui, the crown jewel of the Shakotan Peninsula. This dramatic cape stretches out into the Sea of Japan, offering unmatched views of the vivid “Shakotan Blue” waters below. As you walk the narrow path toward the tip of the cape, you’ll be surrounded by sweeping seascapes and salty ocean breezes. On a clear day, the colors of the sea shift from turquoise to deep cobalt, creating a painterly contrast with the jagged cliffs. Please note that in case of strong winds or rain, the trail to the cape’s tip may be closed for safety—but even from the viewing platform, the scenery is unforgettable. The tour is expected to return to Otaru around 3:30 p.m., with final arrival at Sapporo Station at approximately 4:30 p.m.
