We set off early in the morning for Mollepata, where we'll enjoy breakfast, then continue on to our starting point at Challacancha. After two hours of leisurely walking, we arrive at our first camp for the night, Soraypampa, from where we'll have the opportunity to climb up to Lake Humantay.
After breakfast, we set off again for the Salkantay Pass (4600m), which offers exceptional views of the snow-capped Salkantay Peak (6264m). This will be the hardest morning of the trek, and well worth the effort. A stop at the summit is possible, weather permitting. The hike continues downhill, as we leave the high mountains behind and enter an ecosystem of lush vegetation. Arriving at Chaullay (2950m), we enjoy dinner and spend our second night in this camp.
Day 3 will be devoted to observing the flora and plantations of the region. We first descend into a rainforest, where we appreciate the incredible diversity of orchids, Bromeliads and many other plants. We then pass through the region's coffee and fruit plantations. We'll also have the pleasure of meeting peasant families along the way, notably at Wiñaypoco (2650m) and La Playa (2100m). We arrive at our camp in La Playa in time for lunch. This will also be our campsite for the night, so you'll have the afternoon to relax and discover local life.
After breakfast, you cross a pass at 2950 metres, from where you have a breathtaking view of the citadel of Machu Picchu and the peaks of the region on a clear day. You then descend towards the archaeological remains of Llactapata, which you visit. After a break at the site, you continue your descent for around 2 hours to the hydroelectric power station (Hidroelectrica). From here, you take the afternoon train to the village of Aguas Calientes.
At the crack of dawn, to enjoy Machu Picchu away from the crowds, you take the shuttle or collective bus to the entrance of the site for a complete tour of the lost city of the Incas, with its agricultural and urban sectors and its incredible buildings on the mountainside.* Additional activities on site: (not included in the package and booked in advance) Possibility of adding an ascent of Huaynapicchu or Machupicchu, subject to availability. (These mountains are part of the Machupicchu citadel landscape and have different schedules and entrances, as they take longer to climb and visit).
