The tour begins with a visit to the magnificent Karnak Temple, a vast complex of temples dedicated to Amun Ra, the chief god of Egyptian mythology. The temple is a marvel of ancient architecture, featuring the Great Hypostyle Court, stunning reliefs and murals, and towering obelisks that reach up to 70 feet high, all carved from a single piece of granite. It's a truly awe-inspiring experience that allows visitors to step back in time and appreciate the remarkable achievements of the ancient Egyptians.
Luxor Temple and Karnak were once linked by the Ram-Headed Sphinxes Avenue, a symbol of the annual visit of Ra from Karnak to his wife Mut in Luxor. Over time, the temple of Luxor has undergone numerous extensions and additions, bearing witness to many historical eras. Visitors can see evidence of Greek, Roman, Islamic, and Coptic influences in the various structures and murals. One of the highlights of the temple is the collection of statues and obelisks dedicated to Ramses II, including two obelisks at the entrance, although one was sent to Paris. It's a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of ancient Egypt and the influences that shaped it over the centuries.
(Optional) Experience the stunning beauty of Luxor from high above in a hot air balloon ride. As you float gently over the ancient city, marvel at the breathtaking views of the Nile River, the Valley of the Kings, and the Temple of Hatshepsut. The early morning ride begins with a pickup from your hotel, followed by a short boat ride across the Nile to the launch site. This is an unforgettable way to explore one of the world's most fascinating historical sites.
you'll take a ferry across the Nile to the West Bank, where you'll explore the Valley of the Kings. This arid desert region served as a hiding place for the pharaohs' mummies and treasures, many of which have been discovered in the vibrant, intricately decorated tombs. You'll have the opportunity to visit three of these tombs and marvel at the vibrant colors and murals adorning the walls. Carved deep into the mountain rock, the tombs offer a glimpse into ancient Egyptian beliefs and traditions. Optional visits to additional royal tombs, such as Tutankhamun's, are also available.
Next on your itinerary of the West Bank is the impressive mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the first female pharaoh of ancient Egypt who reigned for two decades. The temple, also known as El Deir el Bahari, was later used as a Coptic monastery by early Christians. Unlike other temples in the area, this one was constructed with limestone and partly carved into the bedrock. It boasts three terraces and is focused on telling the story of the queen's divine birth. Prepare to be awed by the stunning architecture and rich history of this remarkable site.
The final leg of your tour will take you to the Colossi of Memnon. These are two massive statues that represent King Amenhotep III, from the 18th Dynasty of Egypt. Positioned to the west of modern-day Luxor, the statues face east, towards the Nile River. Admire the king's likeness, seated on a throne, accompanied by carvings of his mother, his wife, and symbolic engravings of the gods Hapi and Nile. The statues were carved from a single block of sandstone and named after the Greek hero, Memnon, who fought in the Trojan War.
