Arrival to Keflavík international airport and transfer to Reykjavík. Personal material review, briefing and free afternoon in the Icelandic capital. First night in hostel in Reykjavík. *First dinner & beverages not included.
Transfer to Landmannalaugar in our 4x4 modified vehicle, one of the most beautiful places in the Highlands of Iceland. A geothermal valley surrounded by colorful mountains, where lava fields fall over valleys surrounded by rivers, lakes and beautiful craters. During 2 days we will discover all the hidden secrets in these mountains, hiking in spectacular trails that will allow us to feel the energy that flows through these valleys. Both nights in the mountain hut.
Today we will hike in the less-known hiking paths of Landmannalaugar. Depending on the weather conditions the itinerary for the day will be adapted.
Transfer by 4x4 vehicle from Landmannalaugar to the Langisjór lake, where we will spend the day hiking through the Fögrufjöll mountains (the “beautiful mountains”) with the Vatnajökull glacier on the horizon. We will enjoy the connection with the wild nature that floods this place, where only the faint sound of water and sometimes, the wind is heard. Night in the mountain hut.
Today we will go to the magical & mysterious area of Skælingar, a millenary lava field near the Skaftá river. Following the course of its waters, our steps will take us along bright mossy fields, dramatic black sand deserts and cold glacial rivers, until we arrive at the outstanding Hvanngil canyon, under the impressive Uxatindar mountain. We will hike this canyon, where the lava creates a range of shapes that will leave us speechless. Night at the mountain hut.
After breakfast, we begin our hike to Eldgjá (the “Fire Canyon”). We will make a descent inside the canyon and we will discover its ancient rocks & the “impassable waterfall” Ófaerufoss, before continuing with a hike along the green fields that have been roamed by the shepherds for centuries. Night at the mountain hut.
Today we will hike the wildest trails in the direction to the lakes of Álftavötn. Through green hills and across to the cold waters of the Syðri Ófæra river, we will reach the mountain hut where we will spend the night. In the middle of a green & fertile hollow where the peaceful energy can be easily felt. A really unique place where we will take an “acclimatation day” for exploring or resting, before hiking the longest stage of the trip. Night at the mountain hut.
Today is the longest day of the whole trip. We will continue along the course of the river and we will need to cross the canyon once more to head towards a new stage. We will be surprised by black rocks with bright green stretch marks of the millennial moss that covers the volcanoes connecting them to the flora that surrounds them. On the way we will reach a natural hot spring, and if its temperature and time allow it, we will relax in its geothermal sulphurous waters. We conclude the hike of the day walking towards the mountain hut. Night at the mountain hut.
Early in the morning, we will leave our last mountain hut to face an unknown path through the mountains, which connects our mountain hut with the magical lake of Álftavatn. A 17km hike through breathtaking landscapes that will allow us to feel the concept of spaciousness and the beauty at its best. Night at the mountain hut.
Today we will hike through the famous black desert and we will cross several rivers by foot. Surrounded by the beautiful pink and white flowers of the desert, with the great Mýrdalsjökull glacier a few kilometers away and with the different shades of white in their glacial tongues. From the desert plain and escorted by the Hattafell volcano we will descend to the vicinity of the canyon where the hut is located: the Emstrur canyon.
Today we will visit the surroundings of the Emstrur canyon, under the watchful eye of the Katla volcano. We will cross ancient glacial moraines and volcanic terrain, until we reach an oasis of dwarf birch trees, willow forests and hanging glaciers where our last refuge is located: Thórsmörk, the valley of the God of Thunder. Surrounded by an incredible landscape we will make, if the weather allows it, a delicious barbecue for ending our trip with local products. Night at the mountain hut.
We will leave Thórsmörk in our 4WD modified vehicle surrounded by dreamlike landscapes & waterfalls. Once back on the paved road, we will settle the memories of this incredible adventure. Transfer to Reykjavík and end of our services.
