Monteriggioni Castle – Free Time After lunch, explore the fascinating medieval Monteriggioni Castle, a fortress built by the Sienese between 1214 and 1219 as a frontline defense against Florence. The castle withstood numerous Florentine attacks until 1554, when Captain Zeti handed the keys over to the Florentine forces in a gesture of reconciliation with the Medici—an act considered a “great betrayal” by the citizens of Siena, who famously cursed him. Legend has it that on full moon nights, you can hear the sound of galloping horses and even see the ghost of Captain Zeti riding across the castle grounds. Enjoy free time to wander the medieval walls, snap photos, and soak in the atmosphere of this iconic Tuscan fortress.
