The Giza pyramid complex, also called the Giza necropolis, is located on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt. It includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, as well as their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza. These iconic monuments were built during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, around 2600 to 2500 BC. The site also features several cemeteries and the remains of a workers' village. Positioned on the edge of the Western Desert, the complex lies about 9 kilometers west of the Nile River in Giza city and approximately 13 kilometers southwest of downtown Cairo. Together with the nearby ancient city of Memphis, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.
The Great Sphinx of Giza is the most renowned monument at the site. Carved directly from the bedrock during the 4th Dynasty (around 2613–2494 BC), it is also the oldest. In ancient Egyptian culture, sphinxes symbolized the king with the body of a lion, clearly representing his strength and authority.
The Egyptian Museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East and holds the world’s largest collection of Pharaonic artifacts. Its exhibits span a wide range of periods, from the Predynastic Era through to the Greco-Roman period. The museum’s building was designed by French architect Marcel Dourgnon, who won an international competition in 1895—the first of its kind. Officially opened in 1902, the inauguration was led by Khedive Abbas Helmy II. Since then, the museum has become a historic landmark in downtown Cairo, showcasing some of the most extraordinary ancient treasures on earth.
