Drive to Snagov to visit Snagov Monastery where, according to the legend, Vlad was buried after his assassination. The monastic establishment is located on a small island of Snagov Lake. The architectural style of the monastery follows the architectural pattern that is characteristic to the monasteries on the Holy Mount Athos in Greece . Your first day in Romania ends with a welcome dinner.
Travel to the Medieval Saxon City of Brasov. The most famous landmark of Brasov is the Black Church, the largest gothic edifice in South – Eastern Europe. Brasov is a city with an outstanding medieval atmosphere which has played a vital role in Romania’s history, both old and new. Three quarters of the city is surrounded by mountains, and it is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe.
On your way to Brasov, stop at Peles Castle, one of the most impressive Royal residences in Europe.
Visit the iconic Bran Castle, also known as Dracula's Castle. Discover its tumultuous history, from being a fortress meant to guard the border between Transylvania and Wallachia to the period when Queen Mary transformed it into a Royal Residence and to nowadays as a worldwide known museum.
Head next to the medieval citadel of Sighisoara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded by Saxons during the 12th century, Sighisoara still stands as one of Europe ’s most beautiful and still inhabited fortified cities. Sighisoara is also the place where Vlad the Impaler, known as Dracula, was born. Submerge yourself in the medieval atmosphere by visiting Sighisoara’s main attractions: The Clock Tower – built in 1360 and standing 60 meters tall on top of the citadel's hill, it hosts a museum and offers a great view over the citadel. The Torture Room –this small but interesting museum is housed at the foot of the Clock Tower in the same room where prisoners were tortured and confessions were extorted during the Middle Ages. The Medieval Weapon Collection – very small but it contains an interesting selection of medieval weapons (swords, arrows, etc.). Church of the Dominican Monastery, known for its Transylvanian renaissance carved altarpiece, Oriental carpets and 17th century organ.
From Sighisoara, travel to the city of Cluj Napoca to enjoy a city tour revealing beautiful medieval buildings such as Saint Andrews Cathedral.
Before arriving in Cluj-Napoca, visit Turda Salt Mine, one of the most popular attractions in Romania. Walk through halls named after kings and queens and then descend to a stunning underground world. Ride the Ferris Wheel to enjoy the sights or row a boat across the salt lake.
We leave the impressive town of Cluj-Napoca and head next to Hunedoara. Enjoy a delicious lunch and then discover the greatest Gothic style castle in Romania, Corvinesti. The edifice was built in the 14th Century, on the site of a former Roman camp. It served as a fortress until the mid 1400's, when it became the residence of Transylvania's ruler, Iancu de Hunedoara. Iancu upgraded the fortress and it soon became the most beautiful castle in Transylvania. In the evening, get ready for a unique event: the “Vampires on the Edge” Masquerade Ball, taking place in an impressive hall of the castle. Admire the breathtaking decorations and enjoy a special program you won't forget!
Once you recover from the “Vampires on the Edge” Masquerade Ball, travel to the Medieval Saxon City of Sibiu, the European Cultural Capital for 2007. The fortified town of Sibiu has been the centre of Romania 's German minority since medieval times and it is one of Romania's most beautiful cities. The city contains the largest concentrations of tourist attractions in Romania.
Morning drive to Poenari Fortress, where you can visit the ruins of Vlad the Impaler's stronghold in the mountains. There are over 1400 stairs to climb to the top, but the views are completely worth it. With a lot of memories and surely some regret say good bye to Romania as we travel back to Bucharest. Should you need we can arrange your transfer to the airport. *Please have in mind that transfer to the airport is not included in the tour fare.
