Founded in 670, the city of Kairouan flourished under the Ahlabid dynasty in the 9th century. Despite the transfer of the political capital to Tunis in the 12th century, Kairouan remained the first holy city in the Maghreb. Its rich architectural heritage notably includes the Great Mosque, with its columns of marble and porphyry, and the Three-door mosque which dates from the 9th century.
Visit Sbeitla, a small town in the west-central region of Tunisia, located 250 km from Tunis. It is known for its remarkable Roman site and its Capitol, composed of not one but three temples, dedicated to Minerva, Jupiter and Juno, the patron gods of Rome. Its gigantic Basilica of Vitalis has a superb baptismal pool, covered in mosaics. In the countryside, the arcades of El Gousset are all that remain of a large 33-metre-long church, reminding us that Tunisia was once a key stronghold for Christians in the West.
