Perched above the medieval village, Gruyères Castle has dominated this landscape since the 13th century. It was built by the Counts of Gruyères, who ruled the region for hundreds of years and controlled local trade and agriculture. Originally designed as a defensive fortress, the castle gradually evolved into a comfortable noble residence, with decorated halls and living spaces. After the ruling family went bankrupt in the 16th century, the castle became the residence of regional governors. Today, its peaceful courtyards and panoramic views of the surrounding hills and Alps reflect the rich history, artistic heritage, and rural traditions that define the Gruyères region.
Chillon Castle stands on a rocky island along the shores of Lake Geneva, guarding an important trade route between northern and southern Europe. Built and expanded by the powerful House of Savoy in the 12th and 13th centuries, it served as both a fortress and noble residence. Its lakeside position provided natural protection, while its halls, chapels, and courtyards supported daily life within the walls. The castle is also known for its historic dungeon, where political prisoner François Bonivard was held. Surrounded by lake and mountains, Chillon remains one of Switzerland’s most famous and beautifully preserved historic landmarks.
