The historic Salt Mine is located about 10 km from Krakow and is on the first UNESCO World Heritage List (1978). The current mine was established ad the turn off 18 and 19 century (though mining history reaches antiquity here). The tourist route goes through the most interesting places in the mine that consists of 22 chambers which are connected by salt pathways of lenght about 3 km. Chambers are located at depth 64 to 135 meters underground.

Wieliczka salt mine from the 13th century to 1772 was part of the Cracow Saltworks. The salt extracted in the mine is date back to the Miocene period. In 1976 mine was listed at the Polish national registry of monuments, and then in 1978 it was registered on the UNESCO list. The mine is a place visited by big numbers of tourists from Poland and abroad.
