Upon arriving at the trailhead (approx. 4,600 m), we begin the trek up to the Rainbow Mountain. The hike usually takes 1.5 hours to reach the summit, following a high-altitude trail through a valley with grazing alpacas and views of Ausangate’s glaciers. Guide will lead the way, keeping a steady pace and helping you cope with the thin air. As you climb, you’ll notice the colored stripes become visible on the mountainside. Reaching the summit at about 5,020 m (16,466 ft), you’ll have time to celebrate the accomplishment. At the top, enjoy panoramic views of the vibrant, multi-colored mountain and surrounding peaks – a true payoff for the early start and challenging hike. Take your time at the summit for photos and rest. After soaking up the views, you’ll hike back down the same path to the trailhead, which takes roughly 1 hour of descent. If you struggle with the hike, horseback rides can often be arranged on the spot for an extra (from 80 soles p/p can carry you most of the way)
Once back at the base, a hearty lunch is provided at a local roadside restaurant. After lunch, you’ll continue the journey by vehicle toward Cusco, heading northwest along the paved highway.
After a full day of adventure, the tour concludes in Cusco in the early evening. Expect to arrive around 6:00 to 7:00 pm. You’ll be dropped off at your hotel in Cusco, tired but filled with incredible memories
