The Valley of the Kings is one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world, serving as the royal burial ground for pharaohs of Egypt’s New Kingdom. Among those laid to rest here are legendary rulers such as Tutankhamun, Ramses II, Tuthmosis III, & Seti I, along with nobles, queens, & royal children.
The site is divided into two sections: the East Valley, which contains the majority of tombs, & the West Valley, where only one tomb—the tomb of Ay—is open to visitors.
Between 1539 and 1075 BC, more than 60 tombs were carved into the limestone hills on the west bank of the Nile. The site is dominated by the striking peak of al-Qurn, whose pyramidal shape recalls the grandeur of the pyramids at Giza.
This was chosen as a royal burial ground to protect pharaohs’ tombs & treasures from the rampant looting that plagued the pyramids of Giza and the Nile Delta.
The Valley of the Kings, or the Valley of the Gates of the Kings, is one of the most iconic archaeological sites in Egypt, hiding immense treasures of history beneath its rugged desert landscape. What may appear at first as a barren gorge is, in fact, the final resting place of 63 pharaohs and nobles, including some of the most powerful rulers of the New Kingdom. For nearly 500 years, from the 16th to the 11th century BC, this valley served as a sacred burial ground where kings, their families, and their possessions were entombed in elaborately decorated chambers. Each tomb was designed to guide the deceased into the afterlife, adorned with intricate hieroglyphs and vivid wall paintings depicting religious texts and mythological scenes. There are 63 tombs at the Valley of Kings and out of the 63 tombs, there are eleven tombs in the Valley of the Kings open to the public. Seven of them are included in your standard ticket and for other four you can purchase optionals.
