The journey to El Chaltén, national capital of trekking, travels 220 km through the Patagonian steppe along the mythical National Route 40. Along the way, a short stop is made at the historic Estancia La Leona, by the river of the same name, where you can use the bathroom and enjoy a hot drink or homemade cakes (not included). As you go, you begin to see the peaks of the southern Andes and the unmistakable silhouette of Mount Fitz Roy.
When you arrive at El Chaltén, you make one last stop before starting the trekking, which begins at the Electric River Bridge. There the individual food is delivered and a second guide is added to accompany the group throughout the tour. The first section, measuring 6.3 km, is completed in about an hour and a half, gaining height to the Mirador Piedras Blancas, with spectacular views of the eponymous glacier. From there, the trail descends gently to the Poincenot Base Camp.
At this point, the group can be divided according to their physical level or interest: Group 1: Continue the hike with a demanding ascent of 3 km and 430 meters of elevation to the Laguna de los Tres, at the foot of the Fitz Roy. The effort is greatly rewarded with a majestic view of the turquoise massif and lagoon. Lunch there if conditions permit, in a postcard setting. Group 2: Accompanied by the second guide, continue to Laguna Capri, an equally charming place with panoramic views. There, the lunch break begins and the more relaxed return to El Chaltén begins.
Both groups meet again during the descent and finish the walk together. At 19:00, the vehicle departs from El Chaltén back to El Calafate, with estimated arrival at the accommodation between 21:00 and 22:00.
