Matmata is a city in southern Tunisia famous for its troglodyte houses, which are dwellings dug into the ground and hills. These houses are built in natural caves or man-made pits, and have bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens. The inhabitants traditionally live in these cave houses to protect themselves from the intense heat of summer and the cold of winter. Matmata is also famous for having served as a filming location for several scenes from the Star Wars saga. Indeed, director George Lucas chose Matmata as the setting to represent the planet Tatooine in the Star Wars films of the original trilogy.
