The Corinth Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, arguably making the peninsula an island. With the overnights at our selected locations, you will realize that you have been ... wasting your evenings in Athens if you stayed longer than two nights in the big city!
Ancient Corinth was inhabited in the Neolithic period (6500-3250 BC) but the big prosperity begins in the 8th century. Corinth was a city-state on the Isthmus (canal) of Corinth, the narrow stretch of land that joins the Peloponnese to the mainland of Greece, roughly halfway between Athens and Sparta.
OPTIONAL: Wine tasting at one of the many wineries of Nemea; the Greek Napa Valley!
OPTIONAL: Acrocorinth, "Upper Corinth", the acropolis of ancient Corinth, is a monolithic rock overseeing the ancient city of Corinth and the Corinthian gulf. It is the most impressive of the acropolis of mainland Greece. With its secure water supply, Acrocorinth's fortress was repeatedly used as a last line of defense in southern Greece because it commanded the Isthmus of Corinth, repelling foes from entry by land into the Peloponnese peninsula.
About 120 years ago Odontotos rack railway started from the seaside town of Diakopto parallel to the river and climbed to Kalavrita through bridges and tunnels. The little train incorporated so well to the natural environment that it seems that it had always been there. The way it was constructed did not put a strain on the ecosystem of the gorge. Using stone and wood from the area the technicians' work is so perfect that someone may think that the nature worked on its own.
LUNCH: This will be your first food & drink experience with more to follow. Kalavrita and the surrounding area are a resort for all seasons. This is your lunch place! We explore the center of the town on foot before or after lunch. This beautiful town lies at the foot of Mt. Chelmos and it is a must-visit for the Athenians during the cold months of the year because of its ski center but not only!. Kalavrita is a dreamlike setting with stone-built houses, small squares, charming alleys, picturesque cafés, and tavernas right next to the huge shady plane trees.:An ideal destination ideal for those aiming to combine their love for nature with their romantic mood.
