  First, stop at Madaba city, often called the ‘City of Mosaics’. Madaba owes its popularity to a lavish mosaic map of the Holy Land that covers the floor of St George’s Church, which you can see when you step inside. This relatively modest 19th-century Greek Orthodox church houses a treasure of early Christianity. Imagine the excitement in 1884 when Christian builders came across the remnants of a Byzantine church on their construction site. Among the rubble, having survived willful destruction, fire, and neglect, the flooring they discovered wasn’t just another mosaic but one with extraordinary significance: to this day, it represents the oldest map of Palestine in existence and provides many historical insights into the region.

  Mount Nebo

  Continue to Mount Nebo, the hill where the prophet Moses was said to have been granted a view of the Promised Land before he died. Admire the views of the Jordan Valley, where you can see the ancient lands of Judah and Jericho. Visit the Franciscan monastery, situated on the site of the ancient church of Mount Nebo, to view its relics and mosaics. The museum is currently undertaking a project that aims to create the world's largest mosaic, measuring 30 meters in length and comprising 3.5 million pieces. The mosaic will depict the entire route of the King’s Highway, and visitors can participate in the project by placing a piece in it. The museum also offers a variety of workshops for visitors of all ages.
