    Colossi of Memnon

    The Colossal Colossi of Memnon are two colossal statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III dating back to 1350 BC. It is located on the west bank of Luxor, Egypt, and was originally intended to guard the entrance to the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III. Each statue is 60 feet high and is made of sandstone from quarries near Cairo. The Colossus of Memnon is famous for the hero Memnon, King of Ethiopia, who fought in the Trojan War. After the temple was destroyed by an earthquake in 27 BC, the statues still stand, and it is now a popular tourist attraction.
