On the way, we make a short stop in the town of Hveragerði, giving you the opportunity to stretch your legs, use the facilities, or purchase snacks and drinks before continuing into the Highlands. Known for its geothermal activity and greenhouses powered by natural hot water, Hveragerði offers a brief but pleasant break during the journey.

2Hjalparfoss
Hjálparfoss is a striking double waterfall where two rivers cascade side by side into a single tranquil pool. Háifoss is one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls, plunging 122 meters into a deep gorge shaped by volcanic eruptions and glacial rivers. In recent years, the dramatic scenery at Háifoss gained international recognition after appearing in the season finale of Stranger Things. The Commonwealth Farm in Þjórsárdalur is a detailed reconstruction of a Viking-age farm, built using archaeological evidence from the 11th-century site of Stöng, which was buried under volcanic tephra. The farm provides a fascinating glimpse into early Icelandic life, traditional turf-house construction, and the resilience required by the country’s first settlers. If the setting feels familiar, you may recognize it from Season 4 of Game of Thrones, where the dramatic landscape served as a filming location. The tour stops here around lunchtime, allowing time to explore the buildings at your own pace. Please note that lunch and entrance fees are not included.

After exploring Þjóðveldisbærinn, we begin our scenic journey back to Reykjavík. Leaving the historic farm behind, we travel once more through the wide landscapes of Þjórsárdalur Valley, with views of rivers, lava fields, and distant mountains accompanying us along the way. Sit back and relax as we return to the capital in the evening, bringing a full day of waterfalls, Viking history, and dramatic highland scenery to a memorable close.
