The Great Sphinx of Giza (Arabic: أبو الهول, Abū al-Haul, meaning “The Terrifying One”) is one of Egypt’s most iconic monuments. It is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx—a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human—located on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The face of the Sphinx is widely believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre, linking it to the era of the great pyramid builders. As the largest monolithic statue in the world, it measures approximately 73.5 metres in length, 19.3 metres in width, and 20.22 metres in height. Standing for thousands of years, the Great Sphinx remains a powerful symbol of ancient Egyptian civilization, mystery, and architectural mastery.
