Nairobi: Lake Nakuru Safari & Lake Naivasha Boat Ride Day Trip

12 hours (approximately)

Offered in: German and 3 more

This is one of the few Nairobi day trips combining a savanna game drive with a lake boat ride, giving you both land and water wildlife in a single outing. Lake Nakuru's fenced sanctuary makes it one of the most reliable places in Kenya to see both black and white rhino together. Lion and leopard also roam the park, offering big-cat sightings without the time or cost of a Maasai Mara safari. Look out for Rothschild's giraffe, a rare subspecies found in only a few protected areas in Kenya, plus flamingos and pelicans along the alkaline shoreline. From Nakuru, a relaxed boat ride on freshwater Lake Naivasha brings you close to hippo pods and water birds like fish eagles and kingfishers, with views of Mount Longonot and the Aberdare Range. Both parks sit along the same Rift Valley corridor, roughly 2–3 hours from Nairobi, so this rich, varied experience is fully doable in one well-paced day, no overnight stay needed.

What to expect

Depart Nairobi in the morning and drive into the Great Rift Valley toward Lake Nakuru National Park. Once inside the park, board your safari vehicle for a game drive through open grassland, acacia woodland, and rocky escarpment. Nakuru is known for its dense wildlife, and you'll have the chance to see both black and white rhino in the park's protected sanctuary, along with lion, leopard, and buffalo. Look out for Rothschild's giraffe, waterbuck, and zebra, plus flamingos and pelicans along the lake's alkaline shoreline.

After lunch (own expense, or bring a packed lunch), continue to freshwater Lake Naivasha for a boat ride across the water. Get close to pods of hippos, spot fish eagles and kingfishers along the papyrus banks, and take in views of the Aberdare Range and Mount Longonot. Return to Nairobi by early evening.
