  Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids

  Saqqara (Arabic: سقارة : saqqāra[t], Egyptian Arabic pronunciation: [sɑʔːɑːɾɑ]), also spelled Sakkara or Saccara in English /səˈkɑːrə/, is an Egyptian village in the markaz (county) of Badrashin in the Giza Governorate,[1] that contains ancient burial grounds of Egyptian royalty, serving as the necropolis for the ancient Egyptian capital, Memphis.[2] Saqqara contains numerous pyramids, including the Pyramid of Djoser, sometimes referred to as the Step Pyramid, and a number of mastaba tombs. Located some 30 km (19 mi) south of modern-day Cairo, Saqqara covers an area of around 7 by 1.5 km (4.3 by 0.9 mi).

  Pyramids of Giza

  The Pyramids of Giza, located on the Giza Plateau near Cairo, Egypt, are a renowned complex of pyramids, most notably the Great Pyramid of Giza, Pyramid of Khafre, and Pyramid of Menkaure, along with the Great Sphinx. These structures were built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, between 2600 and 2500 BC. Key features of the Giza pyramid complex: Great Pyramid of Giza (Pyramid of Khufu): The largest and oldest of the three, built for Pharaoh Khufu. It was the tallest structure in the world for almost 3800 years. Pyramid of Khafre: Built for Khufu's son, Pharaoh Khafre, and located southwest of the Great Pyramid. Pyramid of Menkaure: Built for Khufu's grandson, Pharaoh Menkaure, and located southwest of the Pyramid of Khafre.   Memphis and Sakkara

  Along with the pyramid fields that stretch on a desert plateau for more than 30 kilometres (19 mi) on its west, including the famous Pyramids of Giza, Memphis and its necropolis have been listed as a World Heritage Site.[5] The site is open to the public as an open-air museum. According to legends related in the early third century BC by Manetho, a priest and historian who lived in the Ptolemaic Kingdom during the Hellenistic period of ancient Egypt, the city was founded by King Menes. It was the capital of ancient Egypt (Kemet or Kumat) during both the Early Dynastic Period and Old Kingdom and remained an important city throughout ancient Egyptian history.[6][7][8] It occupied a strategic position at the mouth of the Nile Delta, and was home to bustling activity. Its principal port, Peru-nefer (not to be confused with Peru-nefer at Avaris.
