Experience an authentic and unforgettable experience in the Tambopata National Reserve with this 4-day tour. Unlike conventional packages, we take you to three unique destinations: the Chuncho Macaw Collpa, where you will observe hundreds of parrots and macaws in their natural habitat; Lake Sandoval, famous for its giant otters, alligators and exotic birds; and Lake Yacumama, ideal for admiring spectacular sunsets and abundant wildlife.

You will also enjoy a cultural exchange with a Matsigenka family, where you will learn their weaving techniques, use of the bow and arrow, and ancient traditions.

Our groups are small, our local guides highly trained and the jungle lodge offers comfort without losing touch with nature.

    Day 1

    Puerto Maldonado – Philadelphia Community – Nocturnal Exploration

    Tambopata National Reserve

    Firstly, upon your arrival, our team will greet you at the airport or bus station and transfer you to our office for registration. Secondly, we embark on an hour-long scenic journey to Philadelphia, then navigate the Tambopata River for 10 minutes to reach our lodge. Our guide will brief you on the lodge policies and then you can settle into your cozy room. After a refreshing siesta and a delicious lunch, we will embark on a two-hour guided walk through the dense tropical forest, where you’ll discover a diverse array of medicinal plants and trees that are over 600 years old. Our guide leads you to trails and a bird watching tower, providing opportunities to spot exotic wildlife. Return to the lodge after sunset for rest, then venture out for a nocturnal wildlife-spotting adventure. On a clear night, we’ll also witness the breathtaking view of the milky way with a myriad of stars and shooting stars. After a pleasant ecological walk, we return for dinner.

    Explore the Tambopata Reserve : Macaw Watching at the Chuncho Clay Lick

    Tambopata National Reserve

    Day 2 starts peacefully with a warm cup of coffee or tea before setting off by boat along the Tambopata River. As we cruise for over 30 minutes, we may spot wildlife such as jaguars, anacondas, or capybaras. We arrive at the Chuncho Clay Lick, where hundreds of macaws and parrots gather in a spectacular display of color and sound to feed on mineral-rich clay. We spend about three hours observing this natural wonder while enjoying a delicious country-style breakfast. Afterward, we navigate through smaller branches of the river in search of more wildlife, including tapirs, monkeys, turtles, alligators, wild pigs, and even river cats. In the afternoon, we head back toward the city and visit Lake Yacumama, famous for its vibrant sunsets and abundant birdlife. A rowboat tour allows us to spot black alligators, herons, ducks, and possibly a family of otters. We might catch and release piranhas for photos before returning to the lodge to rest after a full day of adventure.

    Sandoval Lake – “Matsigenka” Community

    Tambopata National Reserve

    One of the best times to observe wildlife is during sunrise or sunset. We depart at dawn by boat to reach Sandoval Lake, inside the Tambopata National Reserve. After a 3 km walk along a wooden trail, surrounded by vibrant fauna, we board a rowboat to explore the lake. Here we may spot black caimans, giant otters, herons, turtles, monkeys, macaws, and wild ducks. We return to the lodge for lunch before noon. In the afternoon, we visit a Matsigenka family to learn about their customs and traditions. They teach us how to use bows and arrows, weave cotton, and make fire using only natural materials. At sunset, we return to the lodge. After dark, we head into the forest with flashlights for a night walk, searching for nocturnal animals like porcupines, sloths, insects, reptiles, night monkeys, and owls. We return for dinner and rest after an exciting day in the jungle.

    Tambopata National Reserve

    After enjoying a delicious breakfast and taking a short rest, we will embark on a leisurely walk along a path where we will discuss the towering giant trees. We will arrive at one of these ancient trees, over 700 years old, and begin our hanging bridges experience. These bridges are suspended between the trees, offering breathtaking views of the rich fauna that inhabit the canopy layer of the forest. Collpa Chuncho tour's opportunities to observe exotic species are immense Keep your eyes peeled for toucans, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, monkeys, lizards, orchids, and other exotic plants and animals. In the afternoon, we will return to the city to retrieve any luggage you may have left behind, before heading to the airport or bus station, depending on your travel plans.
