The history of the Delphic sanctuary, the location of the most well-known ancient Greek oracle, is on display at the Archaeological Museum of Delphi, one of the most significant in Greece. The majority of the sanctuary's extensive collections are made up of architectural sculptures, statues, and small items. The well-known Charioteer was part of a complex of statues that featured a chariot pulled by four horses and another male figure. One of the earliest depictions in art of the demonic creature with a lion's body, bird's wings, and a woman's head can be found in the Sphinx of the Naxians, which dates to 560 BC.

In the eighth century the cult of Apollo finally triumphed, and the development of the sanctuary and the oracle began. The temples of Apollo and Athena, were built near the end of the 7th century and were known as "Pronea." Athena was given the name Pronea because her sanctuary was one of the first to appear as one ascends from Delphi to Phocis. It is one of Delphi's oldest structures.

The geographical center of the world, or its navel, was described as Delphi in both ancient Greek history and mythology. Zeus released two eagles to seek out the planet's center, according to an old Greek myth. They flew westward and eastward, and their paths intersected in Delphi.
