What to expect
The first clue leads you to the Evangelische Pfarrkirche, the Protestant parish church whose distinctive spire rises above the rooftops and whose interior holds centuries of Hallstatt family history in its carved pews and epitaphs.
From there the app takes you through the Marktplatz, the small but perfectly formed market square where Hallstatt's tradespeople and salt miners have gathered since the Middle Ages — as photogenic a market square as any in Central Europe.
Next you head to the Schiffstation Hallstatt-Lahn, the boat landing from which ferries have connected the village to the wider world since the lake was the only practical route in or out.
Allow around 2 hours. The village is compact, the walking is easy, and the views from every turn are worth the journey alone.
