Anping Old street which was the first street in Taiwan to be given a name. More than 300 years ago this was the first street built by the Dutch in Anping. In the early days, the street was built solely for pedestrians and pushcarts due to the fact that the street was narrow and there was not that much space to navigate. Many tourists coming to Anping must visit this street, and the noisy and bustling environment of Anping Old Street is one of its hallmarks. The street features all kinds of old stalls and shops, and regardless of whether you are a domestic or foreign visitor coming here to look for nick-knacks, raise your head once in a while to admire the Wind Lion Gods on the roofs of the old buildings or take a look at the Sword Lions on the lintels of doors.
Chikan Tower was built a fort here in 1653 by Dutch, this site abutted the sea. Since then sedimentation has pushed the coastline further west, and all but the foundations of the Dutch strongpoint have disappeared. Classical (and beautiful) Chinese-style structures now occupy the site, making this a splendid spot to wander in the garden and enjoy a cup of coffee before continuing with your tour of Tainan.
Tainan’s Confucius Temple, established more than 350 years ago, is a true must-see in a city packed with essential sights. Not only are the buildings delightfully antiquated, but the gnarled trees which dot the forecourt exude a real sense of history. Confucius was an educator and philosopher who, even now, is known to every person of Chinese descent. His teachings are broadly conservative, yet stress moderation in most facets of human life. One of his core principles has become known as the Golden Rule: What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others.
