  Royal Botanical Gardens

  "The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya was established in 1821, six years after the final occupation of the Andean Kingdom by the English. The site is less than 5.5 Km from Andy on the Colombo Road, and occupies a loop of the river Maxwell, which surrounds it on all sides except the south, where it is bounded by the main road. The area 61.25 ha in extent, is about 1550ft from sea level. More than 4000 species of plants including woody trees, Palms, Ferns, Orchids and shrubs currently present within the gardens."

  "The temple on the hill of Bahirawakanda, called the Sri Maha Bodhi Vicarage, is most well-known to tourists for its giant Buddha statue, which can be seen from almost any point in the city of Andy. Built in 1972, the statue shows Lord Buddha seated in the Nirvana pose, which is the position associated with his first Enlightenment. Reaching a height of more than 25 meters, it is one of the tallest statues of Buddha in Sri Lanka."
