    Coptic Cairo

The current city center of Cairo was not where the settlement of the area began. Instead, the original nucleus of what is now modern-day Cairo can be found in the southern part of the city, known as Old Cairo. This location served as the starting point of an ancient canal connecting the Nile River and the Red Sea, making it a strategic location for the first settlements in the area to flourish over 2,000 years ago. Although the river's course has since changed and now lies several hundred meters to the west, this location still boasts several significant historic sites, many of which date back to the Greco-Roman period when Egypt converted to Christianity. Archeological evidence suggests that settlement at this site began before the 6th century BCE. Around 525 BCE, a fortress called Babylon was erected at the mouth of the canal, marking the boundary between Upper and Lower Egypt.
