The area where Flevoland is located was originally part of the Zuiderzee. In the 20th century, it was decided to reclaim parts of the Zuiderzee to create new land for agriculture and housing. The reclamation of the Zuiderzee led to the creation of the Noordoostpolder and the Eastern and Southern Flevopolders. Flevoland officially became the twelfth province of the Netherlands on January 1, 1986. The province is known for its unique landscape, with vast fields, modern cities, and the Markermeer.
