It is located on the banks of the Peñol-Guatapé reservoir, a body of water created by the construction of a dam on the Nare River. The approximate drive time from Medellin to Guatapé is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. The distance between Medellin and Guatapé is around 79 kilometers by road. The most common route to get to Guatapé from Medellín is to take the Medellín - Bogotá Highway (Highway 25) and then detour to the road that leads directly to the town of Guatapé.
