Leonidas was a king of the Greek city-state of Sparta. His contribution to the second Persian war was really crucial for Sparta's name and fame. More specifically, he led the allied Greek forces to a last stand at the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) while attempting to defend the pass from the invading Persian army; he died at the battle and entered myth as the leader of the 300 Spartans. While the Greeks lost this battle, they were able to expel the Persian invaders in the following year.
Next to Leonida's statue is the museum dedicated to the Thermopylae battle. You will be given information about the battle, the kings and any other important detail about Thermopylae.
The pass of Thermopylae, where the battle took place between the Persians and Spartans will leave you speechless. The remains of the wall and the gate are still there. Thermopylae was the gateway to Greece. The Persians, under Xerxes I, invaded Greece in 480 BC. We will of course see the battle field and travel back to the past while imagining how and where this great battle took place.
The Tholos of Delphi is among the ancient structures of the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia in Delphi. It is actually part of the Delphi UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will of course see the great monuments and will have the chance to admire the amazing architecture!
Delphi Archaeological Museum is one of the principal museums of Greece and one of the most visited. It is operated by the Greek Ministry of Culture. You will hav the chance to see the Charioteer of Delphi, architectural elements, like the frieze of the Siphnian Treasury, and ex-votos dedicated to the sanctuary of Pythian Apollo, like the Sphinx of Naxos.
Apollo was the god of Harmony, music, light, healing and oracles! The famous oracle, the Pythia, operated inside the temple, the location chosen, according to one tradition, due to a sacred chasm beneath the site emitting vapors, which were inhaled by the Pythia. By watching the temple you will basically meet the place where the oracles took place and experience the area where a lot of Generals and Kings were seeking answers for wars and leadership.
