Your journey begins with a visit to the Bridge Between Continents, where you’ll stand atop the dividing plates of North America and Eurasia. Iceland is the only place on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that rises above water, allowing you to walk between two continents at this remarkable site.
Next, you’ll head to Reykjanes Lighthouse, built in 1878 and rebuilt in 1907 due to erosion. Located on dramatic sea cliffs formed by 19th-century lava flows, the lighthouse offers stunning views of the ocean and rugged coastline.
From there, you’ll venture to Gunnuhver Hot Springs, one of Iceland’s largest geothermal areas. Marvel at bubbling mud pools and fumaroles while learning the intriguing myth of Gunnuhver, a haunted site once used by early settlers who harnessed geothermal energy for cooking and bathing.
A short drive will then take you to Brimketill Sea Pools, where natural lava formations create two large, spectacular rock pools along the coast. Although bathing isn’t possible due to the fierce Atlantic waves, the sight of crashing surf and the chance to spot seals swimming among kelp make this a truly breathtaking stop.
A quick convenient stop at the Blue lagoon will give you a chance to see the world famous Geothermal pools, pickup a quick snack from the cafe and use restroom facilities if needed. Blue lagoon tickets and bathing is not included or part of this guided tour.
We will pass through the once-inhabited town of Grindavík, which has become abandoned following recent eruptions that caused damage to houses and infrastructure from flowing lava. During the tour, you'll have the opportunity to see lava intrusions, volcanic fissures, and the haunting silence of this eerie coastal town.
Continuing your exploration, you’ll visit Fagradalsfjall Volcano Site. Get up close to the still-smoking lava fields of the 2021 eruption, where molten rock once flowed freely. An optional 30-40 minute hike to a viewpoint offers a spectacular panorama of the active crater and surrounding landscape. Your guide will share insights into the geology of this powerful volcano and help you find unique volcanic rocks to take home as souvenirs.
Finally, you’ll explore the Seltun Geothermal Area, known for its sulfurous smell, bubbling springs, and colorful mineral-rich hillsides. Spanning approximately 45 minutes by car, this area showcases the intense mineral deposits that paint the landscape in striking reds, yellows, and oranges, all formed by mineral and oxide deposits from underground volcanic activity.
