The first and only one of its kind in Egypt, this tour has been created especially for women. Come and be inspired by the stories of some awesome Egyptian women, from ancient Egypt right through to modern times.
As you wander through the ancient artefacts, hear the awe-inspiring story of Hatshepsut who ruled ancient Egypt in the position of pharaoh for 23 years, an incredible feat for a woman in those times. You’ll also hear about Queen Tiye, another formidable queen – mother of the ‘heretic’ Pharaoh Akhenaten and the grandmother of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. While we are at the Egyptian Museum, we will celebrate Wafaa El Saddik who was the first female president of the museum and continues to do remarkable work to ensure that Egyptian children know about their history.
A short drive will take us to the mausoleum of Shajar al-Durr, who went from being a child slave to ruling Egypt in 1250. Hear about the life, reign and tragic death of this remarkable woman.
After lunch we will head to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and back to Ancient Egypt. Here you will have the opportunity to see the ancient mummies of queens Hatshepsut, Tiye, Ahmose Nefertari and Meritamen, as well as stunning pieces of jewellery and other wonderful artefacts from ancient Egypt.
Our final stop is to the museum of a national icon of Egyptian music. Did you know that Egypt had a singer who was an influence on Bob Dylan, Robert Plant, Bono and Youssou N’Dour? This was Umm Kolthoum, who sold 80 million records worldwide. When she died in 1975, around four million Egyptians lined the streets to mourn her death. This lovely little museum honours her life and gives you the chance to learn more about this extraordinary woman.
