Upon arrival at the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus station, we will meet you and transfer you to our office for check-in. After a well-deserved lunch, we will begin our 35-meter-high Canopy Tower tour, where we will zipline through the jungle. Later, we will begin our next activity, where we will board our boat and navigate the Madre de Dios River in search of jungle caimans. They are usually found on the banks of the Madre de Dios River. With luck, we may see the capybara, the world's largest rodent, which can weigh up to 60 kilos, an impressive relative of the Peruvian guinea pig. Enjoy dinner and a good night's sleep at the lodge. **NOTE: Your arrival flight must be before 1:00 PM for transportation.
After an early breakfast, take a short hike (two miles/three kilometers) to Sandoval Lake, one of the largest piranha habitats in the Tambopata National Reserve. Take a rowboat with your guide to see the numerous bird and monkey species, including hoatzins, cormorants, jacanas, herons, eagles, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, black capuchins, tamarins, and sloths. If you're lucky, you'll meet a family of endangered giant river otters, each nearly two meters long. You might even see the largest caiman ever recorded, measuring over four meters long. Enjoy a traditional lunch at the lodge. In the evening, take a night walk to appreciate the diversity of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals found here. Have dinner and spend another night at the lodge.
Very early in the morning, we will leave our lodge to go to the parrot and parakeet clay lick. Every day, they come early to eat the rich clay, which provides them with the salts and minerals they need to metabolize and neutralize the toxins and acids from the flowers, fruits, and seeds they feed on. We will return to the lodge around 7:00 a.m. for breakfast and board our boat back to Puerto Maldonado. Our boat departs at 10:30 a.m. Afterward, transfer to the airport or bus station. End of our service! **NOTE: The return flight must be after 1:00 p.m. for transportation.
