A day of light and shadow — the most difficult and the most breathtaking chapters of 20th-century history, guided with care. In the morning we visit the Mauthausen Memorial, the former concentration camp above the Danube (entry is free).
Jenny, a historian by education, guides you respectfully through the granite quarry, the "Stairs of Death" and the national memorials, giving context that turns a heavy place into an essential lesson. We take this part slowly and quietly.
In the afternoon the landscape changes completely as we climb to the Kehlsteinhaus — the Eagle's Nest. Pass through the marble-lined tunnel, ride the original brass elevator 124 metres up through solid rock, and step out to one of Europe's greatest alpine panoramas at 1,834 m. The contrast to the morning is exactly the point.
We're honest about the day: 12–14 hours with significant driving, broken by scenic stops. Vlad drives, Jenny guides and photographs — you simply take it in.
Your seamless journey begins with a door-to-door service from your hotel in Vienna. To ensure the perfect experience, we will contact you the day before the tour to confirm the exact pickup time. We can adjust the start slightly based on your preferences, so you don't need to stress about strict schedules. Just relax and let your private team handle the logistics.
Scenic morning drive to Mauthausen (approx. 2 hrs) — live commentary, bathrooms & coffee on request. As we drive west, your guide introduces the historical context of the Nazi annexation of Austria.
We face the dark side of history first. Walking through the memorial, the barracks, and the quarry, you witness the machinery of the regime. It is a sobering start that grounds the rest of the day in reality.
We head towards the German border. The scenery changes from rolling hills to dramatic Alpine peaks. This is the perfect time to decompress, drink water, and listen to stories about the "Alpine Fortress" myth.
We arrive at Obersalzberg and take the special brass elevator up to the summit. The View: At 1,834 meters, you stand where decisions were made, overlooking Austria and Germany. Lunch on Top: We reserve time for lunch in the restaurant inside the former conference hall. Enjoy traditional Bavarian food with a breathtaking panoramic view. (Lunch cost not included). The History: See the fireplace presented by Mussolini and discuss the propaganda value of this retreat. Views from the Eagle's Nest depend on the weather. Please bring a warm jacket even in summer, as it can be windy at the summit.
Evening drive back to Vienna (approx. 3.5 hrs) — rest and enjoy the views. After a long, emotionally and visually rich day, you can sleep comfortably in the back seat while your professional driver takes you safely home.
