    Hai Van Pass

Hải Vân Pass is one of Vietnam’s most scenic mountain roads, winding along the spine of the Annamite Range between Da Nang and Hue. Its name means “Ocean Cloud Pass,” which fits perfectly—mist often drifts across the road while the sea stretches out below. The pass climbs to about 500 meters (1,640 feet) above sea level, offering sweeping views of lush green mountains on one side and the South China Sea on the other. On clear days, you can see long curves of coastline and even parts of Da Nang city; on foggy days, it feels almost otherworldly, with clouds rolling across the road. Historically, it served as a strategic boundary and lookout point. At the top, you’ll find the old Hải Vân Gate, a weathered stone structure dating back to the Nguyen dynasty, along with remnants of bunkers from more recent conflicts.
