What to expect

Just a short distance from the center of Athens, Mount Hymettus offers a true escape into nature. This hike takes you through the Aesthetic Forest of Hymettus, a protected area known for its rich biodiversity and scenic beauty.

We begin our journey from Kaisariani and make our way to a hilltop with stunning views of the Attica basin, where the iconic hills of Athens, such as the Acropolis and Lycabettus, stand out. From this vantage point, we can see all the way to Piraeus and the Argosaronic Gulf. As we hike, we’ll pass by the remnants of two historic churches, offering a glimpse into the area's past.

Our next stop is the Monastery of Kaisariani, a Byzantine monastery dating back to the 11th century, surrounded by lush greenery. About halfway through the hike, we’ll take a refreshing break at a local refreshment stand before continuing toward the Monastery of Taxiarches and the ruins of the Anthousa Tower. This medieval tower, once part of a defensive network, stands as a reminder of the region’s strategic importance. We’ll then complete our loop, returning to our starting point, having enjoyed a journey through the natural and historical beauty of Mount Hymettus.
