Thera (Santorini) Nowadays, the official name of the island is Thera, but it is mainly known as Santorini which is how the Greeks refer to it, too. About one century later, Dorians from Sparta settled on the island and they name it Thera after their king, Theras. During the 9th century BC, Santorini was a Dorian colony and the settlement of Ancient Thera in Mesa Vouno Mountain was its center.
Travel to mount Profitis Ilias, we will visit the traditional village of Pyrgos. Pyrgos is a typical Fortress Settlement of the Cyclades. On the hilltop, you can find ruins of Kasteli Castle, one of the five 'kastelia' on the island. Although there are many reports that Pyrgos was the capital of Santorini in the mid-18th century, the truth is that Pyrgos has never been the island's capital. There is a memorial plaque near the entrance to the castle, commemorating those who died in the Second World War. Traditional architecture remains of neo-classical mansions, narrow winding paths leading up the hillside, small white houses, galleries, vineyards, churches, and breathtaking sunsets. Pyrgos is truly magical. If you make your way up from the main square towards the mansion of Zannos Melathron and up, you will discover one or two wonderful hillside cafes from which you can sip on a glass of wine and breathe in the sunsets and the panoramic views.
Santo Wines Wine tourism center, located in Pyrgos village next to Santo Wines winery with a breathtaking volcano view, is open all year round to welcome visitors from all over the world, at its modern facilities that are dedicated to Santorini wines, gastronomy, and fine living.
Fira is the capital of Santorini. It can be found on the west coast of the island, on the caldera cliffs opposite the volcano. Modern-day Fira is the cultural and commercial center of Santorini. Although geared around the tourist industry, perhaps more so than other areas on the island, there is much about Fira worth taking a look at. Apart from the museums, galleries, and cultural events, it has the island's largest shopping center and the biggest choice of dining out and entertainment. Fira heads the nightlife section - many bars and cafes are actually on the caldera, whilst others, as well as the large clubs, are tucked into the quaint cobbled streets weaving through the town. There is so much to choose from and so many places to explore. The whole of the Fira Caldera is connected by a path at the cliff edge that starts just above the Mayor's office. Our tour ends hereby dropping you off at the same spot we have picked you up.
