Next, you can visit the old capital of Santorini, Pyrgos, and walk along the narrow streets until you reach the Venetian castle. Pyrgos comprises the highest-located settlement of Santorini surrounded by vineyards producing renowned Assyrtiko white wines. We will drive next to one of the best local wineries on the island. Here you have the chance to learn about how wines were once produced on the island, as well as learn of the unique way in which grapes are grown and harvested on Santorini. The Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri was one of the most important Minoan urban centers and ports in the Aegean Sea when it was covered by volcanic ash in the 17th century BC. The town of Santorini was covered in ash following a volcanic eruption on the island, preservation of the settlement is exceptional, making this one of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece. Today the site of Akrotiri is covered by a bioclimatic roof and walkways suspended above the archaeological remains, which allows visitors to walk among the two and three-story buildings.
