Þríhnúkagígur is the only place on planet Earth where you can descend into a dormant volcano and safely explore its massive lava chamber. It is truly a one of a kind experience.
You can find the location by searching for "Inside the Volcano - meeting point" on your GPS. This should take you to Breiðablikskáli, a ski cabin in Bláfjöll mountains.
Our meeting point is a ski cabin in the mountains. When you arrive our guides will give the group a short briefing before leading the way across the lava field. The hike is about 3 km/2 mi each way. The hike usually takes 45 min to cover with your guide. At basecamp you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while you are informed of the safety procedures, followed by everyone gearing up. After a final inspection of your safety equipment we walk up to the lift and descend into the volcano. We lower you into the volcano in a lift, operated by our expert mountaineers. The ride takes 7 minutes and is quite frankly spectacular. You spend half an hour inside the volcano, during which time you can take as many photos as you want. Our guides will be with you at all times to answer any questions. When back on the surface you will be served traditional Icelandic lamb soup or a vegan option. Once everyone is ready you will walk back over the lava field, accompanied by a guide at all times.
