The Taipei National Palace Museum is a world-class museum that hosts an eclectic collection of treasures kept by generations of Emperors ruling from the Forbidden City. In WWII, Nationalist troops seized the most important pieces in order to prevent invaders from ransacking China's national treasures. A twist of fate eventually brought these treasures to Taiwan.
Many festivals and celebrations are held in Lungshan, often called "meeting place of the gods" for the wealth of deities worshipped here. Lungshan means "Dragon Mountain.
The most prominent historical landmark in Taiwan, the CKS Memorial Hall was erected in honor and memory of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, the former President of the Republic of China, and was opened in 1980 as part of a national park and gathering area. The name of the square is officially Liberty Square, as seen above the front gate, however the name change was politically motivated and most people in practice still refer to the entire complex as CKS Memorial Hall.
Taiwanese cuisine's mecca and home to the original (and world-renowned) Din Tai Fung restaurant (located along Xinyi Road), Yong Kang Street is a must visit destination for all travelers to Taipei City. Housing restaurants and cafés that cater to all budgets, Yongkang Street and its neighboring lanes and alleys are home to more than 30 operations, not including night market carts and independent merchants that line the streets selling all types of food, including pan-Chinese cuisine, Korean, Japanese, Western, and unique fusion dishes unique to Yong Kang.
Towering above the city like the gigantic bamboo stalk it was designed to resemble, Taipei 101 is impossible to miss. At 508m, Taipei 101 held the title of 'world's tallest building' for a number of years. Until 2011, it also held the title of the world's tallest green building.
