The Los Loros Regenerative Nature Reserve is a dream destination for birdwatchers, offering a remarkable variety of species, including migratory and tropical dry forest birds. Among the endemic species are the Turquoise-winged Parrotlet and the Chestnut-winged Chachalaca, unique to Colombia’s Caribbean region. The reserve also hosts near-endemic species like the Red-billed Emerald, Chestnut Piculet, Black-backed Antshrike, White-whiskered Spinetail, Steely-vented Hummingbird, and Pale-tipped Tyrannulet and the endemic Turquoise-winged Parrotlet.
Rare sightings of the Gray-capped Cuckoo and Gray-cheeked Nunlet add to the reserve’s appeal. The presence of the vibrant Keel-billed Toucan is not only visually stunning but also a testament to the forest’s health and regeneration. With its diverse ecosystems, the reserve is a haven for birdwatching enthusiasts, conservationists, and nature photographers alike.

Meeting and pickup
Fundación Loros, located in the village of Villanueva, Bolívar — right on the Villanueva–Arenal road, just 35 km from Cartagena. It is very easy to reach and completely safe. If taking an Uber, simply enter the destination as: “Fundación Loros | Loros Wildlife Sanctuary."
What to expect
Begin your day with a traditional breakfast by the lake, followed by an educational talk from biologists about the rehabilitation and release of parrots and macaws. You’ll help to prepare and deliver the food to these birds, connecting deeply with their care.
Explore the reserve’s trails and encounter iconic birds like Amazon parrots, Scarlet Macaws, Turquoise-winged Parrotlets, and Keel-billed Toucans. Rare species such as the Gray-capped Cuckoo and Gray-cheeked Nunlet make this a truly special destination. Along the way, spot monkeys like Cotton-top Tamarins, Howlers, and Capuchins, completing this immersive journey into biodiversity and conservation.
Important: Please remember that it is not permitted to feed the animals directly, or touch them. All activities take place under the supervision of our trained foundation staff, as this is a rehabilitation center, not a zoo.
