    Shōwa-shinzan

    Shōwa-Shinzan is a young volcanic mountain located near Lake Toya and Mount Usu in Shikotsu-Toya National Park. It was formed between 1943 and 1945 during volcanic eruptions that raised the surrounding wheat fields into a new mountain — hence its name, which means “Showa New Mountain.” Today, you can see steam rising from its red-brown slopes, showing that it’s still geothermally active.
