During the hike, you will pass through scenic valleys filled with native vegetation and rare plant species found only in Mauritius. The trail offers a changing landscape, from forested paths to rocky ascents, all while revealing stunning coastal views along the way. At the summit, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramas of turquoise lagoons, nearby islets, and the rugged coastline stretching into the horizon.

Hike up Lion Mountain in Mauritius on a guided 8 km adventure through one of the island’s most scenic and biodiverse landscapes. The trek begins with a safety briefing from professional guides who ensure participants are well-prepared for the journey, recommending proper hiking shoes, insect repellent, water, and comfortable outdoor clothing. The trail starts across sugarcane fields before entering wooded paths rich in endemic and exotic plant species. As you ascend, the terrain becomes steeper and more rocky, offering a moderately challenging experience suitable for hikers with a reasonable fitness level. Along the way, guides share insights about the local flora, fauna, and history of the region, and you may even spot rare birds such as the Mauritian Kestrel or the elegant “paille en queue” flying overhead.

Reaching the summit is highly rewarding, offering spectacular panoramic views over turquoise lagoons, surrounding islets, and the dramatic south-eastern coastline. From this vantage point, the natural beauty of Mauritius unfolds in every direction, combining ocean, mountains, and lush greenery. Lion Mountain is a protruding mountain in the Bambous mountain range. It is visible from Mahebourg and is also very famous for its vegetation and amazing views of the south east. It is one of the mountains across the bay, said to be the only witness left of the ‘Bataille Of Vieux Grand Port.” The Lion Mountain hike usually starts in the sugarcane fields and then follows through the woods and then ends at the peak. Caution should be exercised during the hike, as some of the places are rocky and quite challenging.
