    Pyramids of Giza

The Giza pyramid complex (also called the Giza necropolis) in Egypt is home to the Great Pyramid, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx. All were built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of ancient Egypt, between c. 2600 – c. 2500 BC. The site also includes several temples, cemeteries, and the remains of a workers' village. The site is at the edge of the Western Desert, approximately 9 km (5.6 mi) west of the Nile River in the city of Giza, and about 13 km (8.1 mi) southwest of the city centre of Cairo. It forms the northernmost part of the 16,000 ha (160 km2; 62 sq mi) Pyramid Fields of the Memphis and its Necropolis UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1979.[1] The pyramid fields include the Abusir, Saqqara, and Dahshur pyramid complexes, which were all built in the vicinity of Egypt's ancient capital of Memphis.[1] Further Old Kingdom pyramid .

    Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa

The catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa (Arabic: مقابر كوم الشقافة; meaning "Mound of Shards")[1] is a historical archaeological site located in Alexandria, Egypt, and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.[2] The necropolis consists of a series of Alexandrian tombs, statues and archaeological objects of the Pharaonic funerary cult with Hellenistic and early Imperial Roman influences. Due to the time period, many of the features of the catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa merge Roman, Greek and Egyptian cultural points; some statues are Egyptian in style, yet bear Roman clothes and hair style whilst other features share a similar style. A circular staircase, which was often used to transport deceased bodies down the middle of it, leads down into the tombs that were tunneled into the bedrock during the age of the Antonine emperors (2nd century CE).[3] The facility was then used as a burial chamber from the 2nd century to the 4th century, before being rediscovered in 1900 .

    Alexandria Library

Alexandria came to be regarded as the capital of knowledge and learning, in part because of the Great Library.[11] Many important and influential scholars worked at the Library during the third and second centuries BC, including: Zenodotus of Ephesus, who worked towards standardizing the works of Homer; Callimachus, who wrote the Pinakes, sometimes considered the world's first library catalog; Apollonius of Rhodes, who composed the epic poem the Argonautica; Eratosthenes of Cyrene, who calculated the circumference of the earth within a few hundred kilometers of accuracy; Hero of Alexandria, who invented the first recorded steam engine; Aristophanes of Byzantium, who invented the system of Greek diacritics and was the first to divide poetic texts into lines; and Aristarchus of Samothrace, who produced the definitive texts of the Homeric poems as well as extensive commentaries on them. During the reign of Ptolemy III Euergetes, a daughter library was established in the Serapeum .

The Citadel of Qaitbay (or the Fort of Qaitbay; Arabic: قلعة قايتباي) is a 15th-century defensive fortress located on the Mediterranean sea coast, in Alexandria, Egypt. It was built from 1477 to 1479 AD (882–884 AH) by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa'it Bay.[2] The Citadel is situated on the eastern side of the northern tip of Pharos Island at the mouth of the Eastern Harbour

    Mosque of Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi

Abul Abbas al-Mursi died in 1286 and was buried in a small cemetery within the locality of Bab al-Bahr. Later, a small qubba was built over it, which was developed into a shrine. In 1307, a mosque was built over the shrine, with funding from Zain al-Din al-Qattan, a merchant and Sufi shaykh of Alexandria. The Mamluk emir of Alexandria then rebuilt the mosque in 1477. In 1934, King Fouad I ordered the construction of a mosque square with a capacity of about 3,200 square metres, to include the mosque-shrines of Al-Busiri and Yaqut al-Arshy, with the mosque of Abu Al-Abbas Al-Mursi standing in the middle. The building was then renovated and extensively rebuilt. Italian architect Mario Rossi was involved in planning the design and decor of the mosque, and construction took sixteenor eighteen years. The final structure of the mosque also served as a key source of inspiration for the much larger Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi, which was finally completed in 2007 .
