The High Dam The Problem: The Nile was unpredictable; sometimes it would flood Egypt, and other times it would suffocate it with drought. The Epic: In the 1960s, with unwavering Egyptian resolve, a granite mountain was carved into the middle of the river with Soviet assistance, and historical temples were relocated to save them from being submerged. The Victory: In 1971, the dam was completed; it tamed the river, brought electricity to Egypt's homes, and protected the land from the treachery of nature forever.
The Unfinished Obelisk is a massive archaeological mystery lying in the granite quarries of Aswan. Here is the breakdown: What it is: The largest obelisk ever attempted in antiquity. If finished, it would have stood 42 meters high and weighed nearly 1,200 tons. The Story: Commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut (around 1,500 BCE). During the carving process directly out of the bedrock, a massive crack appeared in the granite, forcing the workers to abandon it. The "Time Capsule": Because it was left in place, it serves as a "manual" for archaeologists. It shows exactly how Ancient Egyptians cut stone using dolerite balls (harder rocks) to pound the granite. The Site: It is now an open-air museum where you can walk right next to the "sleeping giant" and see the chisel marks of workers from 3,500 years ago
